Winter Flowers Bring May Tomatoes?

With the 4th warmest winter since the 1800′s, nature has turned up the clock on Spring and all things new. These February blooming crocuses foreshadow something new this year. Since Old Man Winter took a break, there will be more bugs, more moss in your yard, earlier weeds and budding crabgrass, and best of all earlier gardens of plenty. Could we average gardeners in the northern states really have tomatoes in May?  Well, maybe not May, but perhaps June.

These 4th of July Hybrid tomatoes from Burpee claim 49 days to maturity. Although the reviews have some doubt they can bear fruit by July 4th, I’m going to shoot for a June harvest. I’m getting a late start from seed, but hopefully this mild winter and hopefully exceptional Spring can bring a fresh and new harvest in everything we do! Maybe even by May.

Happy New Year! – Start, Finish, Start Again…

Life is all about starting and finishing. It seems that we are continually being asked to start and finish things at a much faster rate. The ups and downs of our lives can often be correlated with the amount of starts and finishes we have and more particularly how we manage change.

Well this year for me is proving to be no different – starting a new job, finishing an old job, starting some new projects maybe.

The new year is a great time to look back on the past, and look forward to the future. If you start, you must finish. How you finish matters.  The more you start, the more you finish, the more you do.

I always like to set themes and goals at the beginning of each year. My dad always instilled in me to be great at something, make a difference and leave a lasting impact. In honor of my dad, this is my new year mantra.

In a year where uncertainty rules, one thing is for certain – my year will be filled with starting, finishing, and starting again.

An End to One Era – Make a Difference!

The Four Year Career – So much to do.  So little time.

An End to One Era – Make a Difference!

“Be great, make a difference, leave an impact!” – My Dad

As I finish one job at work and start another, I’m left with some deep thoughts and forward looking ambitions. People change jobs all the time. In an era where the “the Four Year Career” is the new normal, how can we grow fast enough each time to make a substantial difference.  I’m about to find out how I did in my quick 2 year career in home energy efficiency.

Over the Holidays, my father got sicker and passed away on New Year’s Day. His era ended, but he got this year off to a great, new start – RIP.

My father was a great man and I had the honor of giving his eulogy. His three messages in life were to be great at something, make a difference, and leave an impact.

This has always been my mantra, and now I get a year to do all three at once in the midst of starting, finishing and starting again. Watch me go dad.

Prepare for Blast Off! – Countdown is on.

This year I am starting a new job at work. I am also finishing a job at work, and carrying forward other projects in my annual quest to make the biggest difference.

In the “four year career” cycle, chaos rules and the inevitability of a finite opportunity to stand out is real. It will paralyze many, but hopefully ignite some to rise to the moment, be great and leave an impact.

My yearly countdown is on. I’m sure to be working overtime and traveling to and fro in my quest to make a difference.

What an opportunity! All at once, and all now. Can it get any better than this? Thank God the sky is still the limit in America, or can we go even higher? Boarding has begun. Fasten your seat belts.

Happy New Year!  Start, Finish and Start Again.

The Four Year Career – So much to do. So little time.

My new year will involve starting a new job focus at work, along with 33 of my direct peers. This move comes to my Department of Energy career after only two and half years of study and interest in home energy efficiency. The new job will be cool working with vehicles and new energy efficiency technologies and fuel sources.  However, I would have preferred a little more time in my last job to make more of a difference.

I read a recent article in Fast Company that highlighted the “four year career.” Believe it or not, that isn’t that surprising or short of a time anymore. If the average worker will now have 7 jobs in a lifetime, the math could work out.

Standing out in a crowd, a job, or an industry will become increasingly hard the less time you have to be great and make a difference. Success in the “four year career” will surely require more than just traditional and expected work for your pay. Innovation, creativity and planned risk-taking will now be required in order to not only rise to the top, but also to survive and prosper. So much to do. So little time.
